  • [05/20/2014] Swim-a-Thon raised over $10,000! Thanks to everyone who participated and especially our sponsors!
The Hornet Swim Club held their annual USA Swimming Foundation Swim-A Thon on Friday May 17, 2014 at Downers Grove South High School.  The participants went an Extra Mile and enjoyed an Extra good time as they met or exceeded their personal goals for the event.  Everyone enjoyed friendly competition and fun, fundraising for our club.  The parents and kids all enjoyed their team spirit by getting involved in a myriad of ways.  Healthy food and snacks were plentiful and everyone did their part to encourage each other cheering on our swimmers. Kudos to all for their fundraising efforts raising $10,105 of our $12,000 goal for our team. The Hornet Swim Team would like to express our appreciation for the following sponsors who went an extra mile for our team participating in the swim-a-thon:
    • FIG Catering. Everyone raved about the fabulous array of fuel they provided for our swimmers.  They treated us to the most delicious spread of mini sandwiches, spring deviled egg, 3G Veggies and Cookies & Bars valued at about $500.
    • Whole Foods of Willowbrook generously provided a $50 gift certificate.
    • Culvers of Darien thoughtfully provided a bucket containing an ultra cute plush ice cream cone with fabulous dining treats for a lucky swimmer and their family to enjoy in the restaurant.
    • Janet Novotny of Set U Free Holistic 90 minute massage therapy for one lucky winner.
    • Sports Authority Willowbrook. Two gift certificates for $10 each and coupons for all participants.
    • All the parents who contributed food and volunteered to help in so many ways.
  • [03/27/2014] Summer Reminders
With school complete and summer now in full swing we wanted to touch on a few things. Remember to check the detailed website calendar for any pool conflicts or changes, which is kept up to date, on a regular basis. Equipment - We still have swimmers coming to practice without the required equipment.  It is important that swimmers have their own equipment and are not borrowing equipment from the facility.  Now that we are outside, there is no equipment to be borrowed. During summer hours, we may not have access to the equipment closet at Hinsdale South.  If swimmers don't have the proper equipment they are not able to complete certain sets the way they are designed.  This will result in the swimmer not achieving the desired training result from that given set.  Bringing their own equipment helps to teach the swimmers responsibility and accountability which are important lessons not just for swimming but for life as well.  If you are not sure what equipment is required for your swimmers specific group, you can find it on the web page under Resources. There is a section called Hornet Swim Club Apparel>Recommended equipment list (please remember this is now required) or you can ask your swimmers coach. Dryland - We will be continuing our Dryland program with Enhanced Fitness starting the week of 6/16.  One of the goals of dryland is to develop athleticism, shoulder/hip stability and strength as well as core strength.  It is important for swimmers to be at dryland as much as possible in order to understand routines and to gain the maximum benefit from the program.  Groups Gold and up will begin to work on developing overall functional strength with some light resistance, core strength, shoulder/hip stability and strength, increased range of motion exercises, and various warm up routines they can use at swim meets prior to their events.
